A200 Sensor to PC Interface

Overview

The A200 is a USB to serial adapter. It provides an easy way to interface with, and provide power to, many of our sensors with serial interfaces. This device is typically used to configure sensors using the Device Configuration Utility (DevConfig). Some sensors, such as our CS450-series and CS650-series sensors, use this interface for configuration and operating system updates.

Detailed Description

The A200 is a USB to serial adapter. It is powered by USB. The USB interface connector is Type B. The serial interface is a 4 pin spring terminal block accepting 16 to 28 AWG wires. The terminal block provides ground, transmit, receive, and 12V.

Serial communications are not true RS-232, but instead are RS-232 logic at 0 to 5 Vdc electrical levels. Receive is RS-232 tolerant. The amount of current supply by the 12 V output is limited to less than 170 mA.

  1. Yes. Because there are a total of 62 available SDI-12 addresses (0 to 9, a to z, A to Z), it would be possible to communicate on the same universal terminal or control port with 62 sensors if each one had a unique address.

In the specifications for the CS650 and the CS655, a limit is stated of 10 sensors per universal terminal or control port because the -VS option gives the sensor an SDI-12 address that matches the last digit of its serial number. That limits the available addresses to 0 to 9, for a total of 10 available addresses. To use addresses a to z or A to Z, change the sensor address with an A200 Sensor to PC Interface or with terminal commands as described in the “SDI-12 Sensor Support” appendix of the CS650/CS655 manual.

  2. While not necessarily required, an A200 Sensor to PC Interface is useful for connecting a computer directly to the CS650 or CS655 for diagnosis, changing the SDI-12 address, uploading new firmware, and verifying sensor functionality. Typically, only one A200 needs to be purchased unless multiple users with multiple computers need to perform these tasks.

  3. No. The A200 is only used to configure the CS451 and CS456 pressure transducers.
